SicEm365’s Levi Caraway and Grayson Grundhoefer evaluate if Baylor should part ways with fourth-year head coach Mitch Thompson at the end of the season.

Baylor currently sits at 67th in RPI and holds a 26-25 (12-15) record, with its final regular-season series against Utah this weekend. Barring an unforeseen run in the Big 12 Tournament, it appears the Bears are going to miss the NCAA Tournament for a fourth straight season under Thompson.

I'm on the fence. A new coach probably doesn't do as much good as pumping a ton of resources into the program. Updates to facilities should be coming, but the biggest part is drawing talent through obvious means. If there isn't a big jump in that department it doesn't make so much sense hiring a new coach. That would probably be secondary.

We do this **** every year with Aranda.

"He can still win the last 3 games"

"NVM. He can still win the last 2 games"

"NVM. He can still win the last game to make us bowl eligible"

IMO, if this athletic department truly cares about wins and losses and building the best athletic department it can, they should look elsewhere for a new coach. I like Mitch but every year seems to be the same, and not successful. This will be Doug's first real chance to make a change regarding a head coach so I will be very interested in what happens in the next several weeks.

If we really care about having a winning, contending baseball team again - and I'm not sure that we do - but if we actually do, it's time for Thompson to go. I realize he was handed a dumpster fire when he started, but this is his 4th year and there just hasn't been all that much improvement. Plus, other than facilities upgrades are apparently on the way, there is little to no evidence that things are about to start trending north in any significant way in the immediate future.

On the other hand, in this current era of NIL budget wars, if there just isn't enough there to "buy" a winner after the higher priority sports like football and men's bball take their cut, I get it. Don't at all like it - but I get it. And if that's truly the case, I suppose why not keep the Gaines happy and continue to roll with Mitch while accepting that we're pretty much just going through the motions with the baseball program.

Technically, no - but as far as any postseason beyond the Big 12 tourney goes (which we don't have a snowball's chance of winning) - it is over.
