I'd never do a DOGE. It didn't allow for the nuances that created the budget. Instead, me? I'd start with department heads. What don't we need? How can we fix X?

The only department that I can see being ended is Education due to its unusual formation. The other departments will require Congressional efforts for trimming and major changes. Unfortunately Congress can't get out of its own way to solve issues. They need to sit down in a special session and set some guidelines and goals for correcting the budget. One guideline should be that no party can blame the other for making cuts in spending or tax changes. Congressional votes can be posted, but no mass media blitz about who wanted to cut/raise what. It is counterproductive to doing the right thing for the whole country.

I am also for locking Congress in an annual session until a balanced budget with debt lowering is in place each year. It is their implied duty.

I am also for the state governors being allowed to meet and determine a third party auditor of the federal budget to keep Congress from cooking the books. The Executive should also have a preferred auditor for the submitted budget. There should be majority agreement by Executive, Congressional, and State auditors that the budget is sound before it can be passed and Congress adjourned.

Give the president a line item veto.

Have a general DOGE like audit every 5-10 years to give a report to Congress and the President about redundancies, needed sunsetting of programs, fraud and potential fraud issues. Such reports must be made public through media accessible to the average citizen. Each report should include simplified synopsis for public consumption. The investigative group should be appointed by both the President and Congress.

I definitely think every govt agency (anyone getting taxpayer money, including NGOs) should be required to maintain accurate accounting of all their operations and open their books to public audit. Any malfeasance must be investigated and prosecuted with long jail terms for the guilty. Audit everyone now and make it an ongoing regular process. Hold their feet up the fire and punish anyone who defrauds the taxpayers. Unfortunately, Congress will never do this because too many of them have fingers in the pie.
