FLBear: " So was the money that Obama sent back, it was Iranian money. Yet, he was ostracized by the right."

In Obama's case, he made two mistakes: He sent money w/o precondition, hoping to persuade the Iranians to negotiate further in good faith. When the Iranians did what they always do instead, this made Obama look naive (which is what the Iranians wanted) and no real deal resulted. His second mistake was sending cash, which led to a very bad optics situation.

And as you can see, even though this time we at least in theory are not releasing money unless and until specific terms are met, the President is already under attack from people looking for any reason to make such attacks.

FLBear: "Problem I have is that this accomplished nothing. There still is no proof of a "nuclear bomb" two weeks from completion. Yet when Bush went into Iraq, everyone ostracized him for the WMD not being there."

One thing about people in the Information Age - they imagine not only that they are entitled to know every last detail, including things agreed to in confidence and secret, but also that whatever online source they prefer has the complete truth and if there is any difference between what the government says and the media says, it must be the government who is wrong.

Now as for what was accomplished, we did in fact accomplish several things, including decimation of Iran's naval and air forces, and destruction of all extant nuclear development means. What was not accomplished were replacement of the regime and control of all fissionable materials. Too many people see this only in a binary win/lose condition. Conflicts in History often produced partial or debatable outcomes. It should also be understood that Trump avoided an occupation of Iran, massive troop losses, as well as expansion of the war to include new powers against the US.

Regarding the decision to attack Iran in 2025 and this year, the meat of the decision is not available to public, but given Trump's record during his first term, we can tell that something was brought to his attention which provoked the attack. After the intelligence adventures during the Bush Administration, a trick by the IC cannot be ruled out, but an actual effort by Iran to go from 'we have some enriched material' to 'we have a nuclear weapon' should not be rejected, especially given Iran's history, both over the last several decades and in recent years.

FLBear: "Trump, we are supposed to cheer? This war cost billions and accomplished nothing, worse of all it cost the US pretty much all of our political clout in Europe and a lot in Asia.

The worst thing I see, is that Europe and Asia did not follow the US and the world did not stop. That is a message resonating around the world right now. Maybe the US is NOT that needed and we can say No."

Again, there were accomplishments, but I understand how someone determined to attack the President would refuse to admit it. I disagree regarding our allies.

England in particular has proven itself hypocrite. The "special arrangement" which existed for more than a century between our two countries is effectively dead. We helped England in her darkest hours, with material and later troops and of course money. When 9/11 happened we got some pretty speeches from England and when England stood to gain from invading Iraq they did so, but against Iran our 'cousin' turned to Allah instead.

Europe has always been callow to some degree, happy to receive things from the US but never the spine to stand with us when it might cost them something.

As for political clout, ironically this will play out a bit like Thatcher's war in the Falkland Islands. In that war, Thatcher showed she was willing to go alone if needed, and her country could not be bullied by the silence of her 'allies'. Same here, if the US needs to do something and we have a leader with the spine to do it, we will carry the load as needed. The world demanded the US be their policeman for decades, it's time they learned we will use our force to protect our own interests.

It also means that we can, as you said, say 'no' to these other countries if they want us to take casualties for them in places like Somalia or Bosnia. US troops need not be at the beck and call of the UN.

FLBear: "The whole thing was and is a debacle. Israel won, they not only got us to fight Iran but now are integrated into our system, not just getting aide, but directing it."

Disagree again about 'debacle', you are looking through spite-filtered lenses again. But we do need to have a public debate about Israel. On the one hand, I fully believe in Israel's right to defend itself, and Iran has a part in the October 7 massacre to answer for. But I strongly dislike Israel taking actions which put US troops in peril, or which damage our interests.

I think frank discussion in private with Netanyahu's people should be held in the immediate future, with sharp reminders that the US is not at Israel's beck and call, and some actions by Israel would provoke a response from the US that Netanyahu would not enjoy.

FLBear: "Trump has been a disaster."

Disagree, as noted above. There is a lot more to this, but some people miss the details, and some don't want to consider the details.

You are living in delulu world.

1. We don't even have a deal. We have an MOU that sends $24B to Iran in hopes of getting a deal in 60 days that will cost another $300B. How, in your orbit, is that better than a deal that has global partners (Europe, Us, China) and International IAE inspectors?

That delusion is why we have been bombed out of the ME. Had Trump negotiated the Obama deal (He can't because he's too smart to), you'd be screaming "Art of the Deal"

2. Going into Iran has been a national embarrassment. It has become obvious that Trump has no clue. He's learning on the job, and each step is a contradiction to the previous step.

3. What is the cost to our ME bases and equipment?

4. We have an MOU that Israel will not abide by. Keep your eye on the sabotage (similar to how he treated the JCPOA.) Be open to tactics against us that undermine us.

This is a total surrender, and to Trump's credit, it's the only play we have.

Fox news reports:

President Donald Trump on Wednesday called reports of a leaked memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran "false" and said the U.S. would not be giving Iran any money as part of the ceasefire framework.
Asked by Fox News' Peter Doocy about reports of a $300 billion investment and reconstruction fund funded by Gulf allies, Trump responded, "It's false. False."
"You can invest if you want. I mean, what am I going to do, say nobody's ever allowed to invest? No, we're not investing. We're not putting up $0.10. And, people can decide to do that, but that's up to them. I mean, do you want me to say nobody's ever allowed to invest in in a country?" Trump said.
"We are not investing in it and we do not have a fund," Trump said.
Doocy asked Trump if he was asking Gulf countries to invest in any such fund. The president replied, "No, I'm not."
"If they do it, fine. But I would say they won't be doing it for a while until they find out the behavior. It's a behavior thing, but we are not investing. That's a false story that got picked up incorrectly," Trump said.
Trump also said that the memorandum of understanding is not final and that if Iran does not behave that the U.S. would return to bombing the country.
"No, it's not final it's a memorandum of understanding and if I don't like it, we'll go back to shooting at them, dropping bombs on their head," he said.
"If I don't like it, if they don't behave, we'll go right back to dropping bombs right smack on the middle of their head, ok? Because they've misbehaved for 47 years."

Well the people declaring that we (US taxpayers) were giving Iran 300 billion seem to be wrong and over-reacting as usual.

At worst the US is going to allow investment into Iran, if they behave.

IMO, they should just call the MOU -- "the mid term pause".

Kind of like our POTUS...

This is where it would be nice to have a credible voice that could speak with some clarity, but there are seemingly none to be found in the current admin. Oh, I know, maybe they could just release the text of the agreement and we wouldn't have to take the words of notorious liars for it. Wouldn't that be nice.

We should all be skeptical of Trump's version. You'd think we'd understand that by now.

What is for certain is that Iran is already back selling their oil into the global market, something previously restricted under sanctions, and they're getting access to Billions of previously unavailable dollars regardless of the ultimate sources (guarantee the U.S. will participate in some way if a deal happens).

Meanwhile, no regime change, no commitment on Hezbollah, no boxing in of China, no Abraham accords, and who knows what about the "harmless dust".

The cynical move for Iran would be ramping up pressure on Hormuz and Gulf Arabs states and refusing diplomatic efforts leading up to the mid-terms to force Trump to choose between Israeli/Gulf Arab interests or American interests knowing it will likely flip congress over to the democrats and they will force him to end the war

I don't think that TRUMP bothered to read the Memorandum that HE allegedly signed on Sunday. Here is the entire text of the document, released by the United States Government:

The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran have jointly agreed in good faith on [ __ date] on the following:

1 The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran and their allies in the current war are signing this MOU to declare the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and undertake from now on not to initiate any war or any military operation against each other, and to refrain from the threat or use of force against each other, and ensuring the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon. The final deal will confirm the permanent termination of the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon and other provisions of this paragraph.

2 The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran undertake to respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity and to refrain from interfering in each other's internal affairs.

3 The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran commit to negotiating and achieving the final deal in maximum 60 days, extendable with mutual consent.

4 Immediately upon the signing of this MOU, the United States of America will begin the removal of its naval blockade and any disturbances or impediments against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and will fully end the naval blockade within 30 days. During this period, the traffic of vessels will be in proportion to the numbers of pre-war traffic being restored by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The United States of America further undertakes to remove its forces from the proximity of the Islamic Republic of Iran within 30 days after the final deal.

5 Upon the signing of this MOU, the Islamic Republic of Iran will make arrangements using its best efforts for the safe passage of commercial vessels with no charge, for 60 days only, from the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman and vice versa. The traffic of commercial vessels will immediately start, and considering the need for removing the technical and military obstacles, and demining by the Islamic Republic of Iran will be instated within 30 days. The Islamic Republic of Iran will conduct dialog with the Sultanate of Oman to define the future administration and maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz in discussion with other Persian Gulf littoral states in line with the applicable international law and the sovereign rights of coastal states of the Strait of Hormuz.

6 The United States of America undertakes with regional partners to develop a definitive, mutually agreed plan with at least USD 300 billion for the reconstruction and economic development of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The mechanism for the implementation of this plan will be finalized as part of a final deal within 60 days. All required licenses, waivers and permissions needed for the relevant financial transactions will be granted by the United States of America.

7 The United States of America undertakes to terminate all types of sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the United Nations Security Council resolutions, IAEA Board of Governors resolutions, and all unilateral US sanctions, primary and secondary, in an agreed upon schedule as part of the final deal. The Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America acknowledge the critical importance of the sanctions termination issue above mentioned, and expressed their intentions to immediately address these issues in the negotiations in order to achieve mutual agreement on them.

8 The Islamic Republic of Iran reaffirms that it shall not procure or develop nuclear weapons. The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran have agreed to resolve the disposition of stockpiled enriched material pursuant to a mechanism that will be mutually agreed upon in accordance with the schedule mentioned in paragraph seven, with the minimum methodology to be down blended on site under the supervision of the IAEA. The two parties also agreed to discuss the issue of enrichment and other mutually agreed matters related to the Islamic Republic of Iran's nuclear needs, based on a satisfactory framework being agreed upon in the final deal. The final deal will confirm the provisions of this paragraph. The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran acknowledge the critical importance of the nuclear issues above mentioned. They express their intention to immediately address these issues in the negotiations in order to achieve mutual agreement on them.

9 Pending the final deal, the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran agree to maintain the status quo. The Islamic Republic of Iran will maintain the current status quo of its nuclear program, and the United States of America will not impose any new sanctions and will not deploy additional forces in the region.

10 The United States of America undertakes that immediately upon the signing of this MOU and until the termination of sanctions, US Department of Treasury will issue waivers for the export of Iranian crude oil, petroleum products and derivatives, and all associated services, including banking transactions, insurances, transportation, etc.

11 The United States of America undertakes to make fully available for use the frozen or restricted funds and assets of the Islamic Republic of Iran upon the implementation of this MOU. The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran will mutually agree on the procedures related to the release of these funds during negotiations. Such funds, whether retained in the original account or transferred, shall be made fully usable for payment to any ultimate beneficiary designated by the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The United States of America undertakes to issue all necessary licenses and authorizations accordingly.

12 The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran agree that an executive mechanism will be established to monitor the successful implementation of this MOU and the future compliance of the final deal.

13 After signing this MOU, and subject to the beginning of the implementation of paragraphs 1, 4, 5, 10 and 11 of this MOU, and the continuing implementation of these measures, the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran will start negotiations regarding the final deal exclusively on the other paragraphs.

14 The final deal will be endorsed by a binding UNSC resolution.

Does seem onesided..... Nothing about not supporting terrorist proxies. I'm not down with the rebuilding fund, but I guess we get to at least supervise it. I can't wait to see the congressional kickbacks. We are letting them export oil, they can pay for that themselves. Is Iran holding Ivanka hostage?

Have we ever had a president that brought up past presidents so frequently?

Reagan is rolling over in his grave. Iran's nuclear ambitions were not curbed, and they have learned that threatening the Strait of Hormuz works and will undoubtedly leverage it in the future. Now, Iran gets to build brand-new infrastructure under this deal.

Before the war, the strait was open, Iran was being crushed by sanctions, and 13 service members were still alive. Now, 13 Americans are dead, families have paid billions at the pump, sanctions will be lifted, and the bombing has stopped. This is the worst foreign policy blunder in decades.

This aged well. The MoU has been released with no surprises.
