Baylor baseball and head coach Mitch Thompson have earned a commitment from Miami right-handed pitcher Tate DeRias; he chose the Bears over North Carolina State, Georgia Tech and Florida State, among others. DeRias becomes the third transfer portal addition of the offseason, joining Winthrop’s Brayden Gilley and Texas State’s Keller Eberly.
As a true freshman at Miami, DeRias went 2-3 with a 5.77 ERA over 18 appearances, totaling 43.2 innings pitched and 30 strikeouts. In conference play, he posted a 2-2 record with a 5.13 ERA in nine ACC games and closed the spring making seven consecutive starts.
In his sophomore campaign, the 6-foot-4, 196-pounder took a step back statistically, appearing in 11 games (five starts) and recording a 12.15 ERA, 2.60 WHIP and a .353 batting average against across 20 innings. He was slated to be Miami’s Sunday starter but struggled with command, as he punched out 26 batters while issuing 28 free passes, and was eventually moved into the bullpen.
The New Jersey native played at Gloucester Catholic High School and helped lead the Rams to back-to-back state titles and a top 15 national ranking in 2024. He was named the Tri-County Conference Player of the Year and threw a no-hitter in the 2024 State Championship with 13 consecutive strikeouts.
Baylor’s set to return pitchers Zack Wallace (So.) and Mason Green (Jr.), who will be coming back from injury, while losing Ethan Calder (Sr.) to graduation and potentially Lucas Davenport (RJr.) to the MLB Draft. DeRias will have two years of eligibility remaining or three, depending on whether the new “five-for-five” lawsuit passes.
